Johns Hopkins Hospital Baltimore, MD: There is a tremendous shortage of kidneys needed for transplants. In a first of its kind study, a hepatitis C (HCV) infected kidney is being transplanted into HCV-negative person and being treated with Zepatier with and without ribavirin in the HCV-infected livers that are genotype 1. In the HCV-infected kidney that is genotype 2 or 3 the people will be treated with Zepatier or sofosbuvir. Treatment is occurring at the time of the transplant.
